Mary Schmich won the Pulitzer Prize for Commentary in 2012, as a columnist for the Chicago Tribune. In addition to working for the Tribune from 1992 to 2021, she also wrote the comic strip Brenda Starr, Reporter for the last 28 of its 60 years and she wrote the 1997 column "Wear Sunscreen", with the often quoted "Do one thing every day that scares you", frequently misattributed to Eleanor Roosevelt.

Barbara Brotman is an award-winning former Chicago Tribune writer and columnist. She wrote the About the Town column in the metropolitan news section, feature stories, and special projects, and was the columnist for the Woman News section from 1994 to 2004. Many readers saved her columns on parenting milestones like sending a child to kindergarten for the last time or revealing the truth about the tooth fairy. She took a buyout from the Tribune in 2015, became a development writer for the University of Chicago Medicine, and retired from there in August.
