Topic: Fly Already by Etgar Keret

The literary critic Clive James called Israeli author Etgar Keret “one of the most important writers alive” and his work has been translated into over 40 languages.

Following The Bus Driver Who Wanted to be God (2001), The Nimrod Flipout (2006), The Girl on the Fridge (2008), Suddenly, a Knock on the Door (2012) and The Seven Good Years (2015), his newest collection Fly Already won the Sapir Prize, Israel’s most prestigious literary award.

His appearance on “This American Life” and in The New Yorker has made him a cult darling in the US. As Deepa Bhasthi wrote in Hyperallergic: “A reader can gain much . . . from even a casual reading of the stories in Fly Already. But it is by rereading them a second or third time, ruminating on each one, that one will find in Keret’s nuanced storytelling its great importance to our times.” Try to read the entire collection and then go back to re-read each of the selected stories for our discussions.
