Refugee Resettlement
Sukkat Shalom has sponsored and worked with many refugee families over the years. Since 2022, Sukkat Shalom has had the privilege of sponsoring several families through HIAS-JCFS, a refugee protection organization. Our families have come from Afghanistan and Central African Republic.
Update on Current Family
In May 2023, Sukkat Shalom welcomed the Djoubairous, a family from Central African Republic. The family spent the last nine years in a refugee camp in Chad, where their two boys, ages three and six, were born; they are now living in an apartment in Skokie.
Our volunteers have been helping the family get settled in Chicago. In addition to greeting the family at the airport and setting up the apartment, our volunteers have assisted with applying for public benefits, school enrollment, procuring employment, cultural orientation, referral to English language classes and obtaining healthcare.
From navigating the CTA, to play dates in the park, scheduling a first haircut, and finding treasures at Target, our volunteers agree that their time spent with this family is meaningful and rewarding.
