Within the Congregation

Sukkat Shalom was formed from a small group of intermarried couples who met for mutual support and learning and who began to include their young children in that process of learning and doing. Since that time, Sukkat Shalom has developed into a spiritual home for intermarried families, Jews by birth, Jews by choice, and individuals and families searching for a meaningful way to experience the wonders of Jewish life.

In our worship services, the non Jewish partner is fully included in the ritual of the congregation. Our goal is to be inclusive rather than creating boundaries limiting the participation of our congregants. We try to create a congregational family of welcome and acceptance in everything we do.

Within the Community

Our partnership with the other faith communities of Wilmette is one of the most distinctive aspects of Congregation Sukkat Shalom. We have shared worship space with First Congregational Church of Wilmette, Wilmette Community Church, and the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints, but far more important than sharing sacred space, we have always been committed to sharing together the sacred tasks of building a better world through celebrating our diversity and uniqueness. Through study, worship, guest scholar classes, social justice programs, and various other activities we continue to learn about each other and create a community of support and understanding. We are currently partnering with First Presbyterian Church of Wilmette in the Family Promise program which provides support for families who are homeless.
